My Story
A Journey from the UK to California
I am originally from a small town near Manchester in the north of England. In 2009, along with my husband, Eric, I embarked on a life-changing adventure that brought me to Santa Barbara, California. Since then, I’ve expanded my family, acquired a couple of cats, nurtured my passions, enriched my mental well-being, and launched my own business!
A Lifelong Love of Learning and Teaching
Teaching and learning have always been at the heart of my life. I’m dedicated to helping both children and adults become the best versions of themselves and preparing them for a bright future. With a solid background in science, specifically in archaeology and archive conservation, I’ve always been eager to share my knowledge and experiences.
Professional Experience in Education
For the past three years, I’ve worked as an elementary school Curriculum Specialist. In this role, I’ve conducted reading interventions, co-taught math lessons, arranged schedules, performed data analysis and led a team of six. My work required flexibility and responsiveness to the (often conflicting) needs of students and teachers. During this time, I enhanced my skills through professional development, including IMSE training in Comprehensive Orton-Gillingham (science of reading and phonics) and Morphology Plus. I am a word nerd!
Passion for Reading and Math
Reading is a lifelong passion of mine, and I love encouraging children to explore the wonders of books. I also find joy in helping others discover how rewarding math can be, equipping them with problem-solving skills to tackle challenges confidently.
Creative Pursuits in Sewing and Quilting
Creativity is the cornerstone of my life. For well over a decade, I’ve been an avid sewist and quilter. I’m passionate about colour, pattern, and innovation, and I love sharing this enthusiasm with others. My experience includes:
-
Working as a Sales Assistant in quilt shops
-
Designing and running Summer Camps and After-School Sewing programs for kids aged 8-14
-
Teaching beginner’s quilting lessons for adults
-
Conducting private and semi-private sewing lessons for children
-
President of the Coastal Quilters' Guild of Santa Barbara and Goleta for two years and an active member for almost 15 years
Empowering others to realise their creative dreams is fundamental to my teaching style. I have learnt so much from making mistakes, but not giving up, and realising how much I can achieve with persistence and commitment.
Encouraging Everyone to Bee Your Best!
Whether it’s early reading, math tutoring, sewing, or quilting, my goal is to inspire and support everyone in their journey to becoming their best selves. Let’s embark on this exciting adventure together!
